First, a note on open hours and volunteers…

As always, but especially at the moment, we need volunteers!

For anyone who has come by the infoshop during open hours to find it closed, we apologize for the inconvenience.

*Actual open hours are now posted every week on the website (www.seditionbooks.org) and elsewhere in bold*

Feel free to give us a call before you head out to visit..occasionally a volunteer may, at the last minute, find they are able to fill part of a shift that is not listed for that week.

The volunteer schedule is filled at our collective meetings, which are open to the public every Monday at 8pm. If you cannot make a meeting but would like to be trained as a volunteer, please email us at seditioncollective@yahoo.com

Needless to say, Sedition needs more people to keep the space open; to be able to staff/coordinate more events and plan a wider variety of them; and to keep the project infused with fresh ideas and perspectives.

Punk Movie Night - The Decline of Western Civilization

The Revolution of Music. The Rise of a Culture…

“Filmed through 1979 and 1980, The Decline of Western Civilization is a documentary on the Los Angeles punk rock scene. In 1981, the LAPD Chief of Police Daryl Gates wrote a letter demanding the film not be shown again in L.A. Over the years the film has gained cult status.

Featuring concert footage of legendary Los Angeles punk bands, and interviews both with band members, the publishers of Slash, and with the punks who made up their audience, the film offers a look into a subculture that was largely ignored by the rock music press of the time.

Bands included are Black Flag, The Germs, X, The Bags (billed at the time as The Alice Bag Band), Circle Jerks, Catholic Discipline, and Fear.”

No cover, donations appreciated.

The following are not Sedition events, but you may see some of us there:

August 2, 7:30-10pm @ Houston Institute of Culture (708-C Telephone Rd.)

The Mountains Tremble: A Report Back from the Revolution in Nepal

“Nepal is a small land-locked country where communist revolution is changing everything. People are rising up against kings, castes, and imperialism. Women are rising to lead. The revolution is spreading into surrounding India. In May and June of 2010, Eric Ribellarsi traveled to Nepal to report on these events. Eric's presentation will tell the story of this revolution, the current situation in Nepal, and feature video and photography from his journey.”

-----------

August 6, 7pm @ the Eldorado Ballroom (2310 Elgin)

Film Screening: The War on Kids

“In 95 minutes, THE WAR ON KIDS exposes the many ways the public school system has failed children and our future by robbing students of all freedoms due largely to irrational fears. Children are subjected to endure prison-like security, arbitrary punishments, and pharmacological abuse through the forced prescription of dangerous drugs. Even with these measures, schools not only fail to educate students, but the drive to teach has become secondary to the need to control children.
