Seditious upcoming events in May!

Hey there Houston,

We have a couple of great events coming up at Sedition this week--one of em is tonight our monthly Dinner and a Movie featuring the Baader-Meinhof Complex. Then later in the week we'll be hosting a screening of Crude: The True Cost of Oil which is an amazing film that indicts the Chevron/Texaco corporation for environmental devastation. We are screening it with the folks from Rainforest Action Network and Global Exchange's Chevron Watch project as a lead up to the demonstration at Chevron's HQ a few days later. Rumor has it that there will be representatives of the anti-Chevron resistance movement from Ecuador in attendance to answer questions about the ongoing struggle there. What better way to spend a Wednesday afternoon in the petrochemical capital of the USA than demonstrating at Chevron's shareholder meeting. Details are at:

Other than that, Sedition is rolling along. We have a pile of new books in our Feminism and Gender section and we should be getting a whopping huge order in from AK press in time to wow the kids at Summerfest this year!

We hope to have a brand new AC unit to keep you cool at all those events this summer. If you are feeling generous, we'd be happy to take donations to offset the cost of this monster... or come in and buy a pile of summer reading!

Sedition Books is still located at 901 Richmond Avenue (That's one block East of Montrose) and you can call or check out our website for more info: 713.523.0807 or www.seditionbooks.org

You can also look for us on facebook or myspace or follow our news on twitter-just search for seditionbooks.

All events are free but we can always use your donations for the infoshop and the touring bands and speakers.

Dinner and a Movie: The Baader Meinhof Complex

Come on out for another delicious vegan dinner and a film about the armed left-wing resistance in Germany in the late 60's early 70's...

7pm dinner: Vegan meal!
8pm movie:

The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008)

Germany 1967. The children of the Nazi generation have grown up in the devastation their parents created. They vowed fascism would never rule again. In their fight for freedom they lost themselves in the cause and ignited a revolution around the world. Uli Edel directs this film, charting the birth of West Germany's Red Army Faction, a radical left-wing terrorist group formed in the late 1960s amid a climate of revolution and a fallen generation. Staging a series of bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, the RAF waged a war against fascism with a direct assault against the powers of American imperialism and the fledgling German democracy. The film is a dramatized account, and should not be taken as an accurate portrayal of all the characters involved. Still, it captures the context of the times...

Crude: The Real Cost of Oil
with a special Q &A with Ecuadoran Activists Guillermo Grefa and Mariana Jimenez

Crude: The Real Cost of Oil (2009, 104 min.)
Three years in the making, this feature from acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Brother’s Keeper, Paradise Lost) is the epic story of one of the largest and most controversial environmental lawsuits on the planet. The inside story of the infamous “Amazon Chernobyl” case, Crude is a real-life high stakes legal drama, set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. Presenting a complex situation from multiple viewpoints, the film subverts the conventions of advocacy film-making, exploring a complicated situation from all angles while bringing an important story of environmental peril and human suffering into focus.

The film has been in the news recently as its director has been battling to prevent Chevron from subpoenaing over 600 hours of raw footage from the making of the film. A judge ruled that filmmakers do not have the same privilege as journalists but Berlinger is appealing. To read more check out: http://www.crudethemovie.com/crude-blog/

Sponsored by the True Cost of Chevron Network/Rainforest Action Network who are calling for a protest at Chevron's shareholders meeting on May 26th. More info is below...

Sedition Books Anarchist Cafe
Every Thursday, 8-10pm at Sedition Books (901 Richmond Ave.)

Stop by for coffee, tea, cookies, and conversation!

A-Cafes are held in coffee houses, bars, infoshops, public parks, people's homes, and in the open air, out on the street. An A-Cafe is an informal meet-up, gathering, coffee klatsch or drinking brigade where anarchists can get to know each other, hang out, shoot the breeze, talk some shop, talk about the projects that we are working on, and to organize new projects in our community. The gatherings are informal, and based on chatting and sharing information. There isn't a fixed agenda, but there's always plenty to talk about and things for anyone who's an anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, or just curious to do.

Houston Anarchist Black Cross Pamphlets to Prisoners

Houston Anarchist Black Cross has been sending free literature to prisoners since 1999, as part of our efforts to struggle against the prison industrial complex. In recent years we've developed a catalog of reading materials, including topics like political theory, resources for prisoners, Black Liberation, Chican@, Feminist, and other radical ideas. We need your help to fulfill the large volume of requests for literature that we receive from prisoners across the southern U.S.

Please show your solidarity with the millions of people behind the prison walls, and join us to help mail pamphlets out.

We will have baked vegan goods for sale for your refreshment, and to help support our efforts.

We can always use $$, stamps, envelopes, and paper - please bring some if you have it, or get in touch with us if you can help.

The African Remedy
A reading and book signing by Aam’pah-Katoh BaNtump’l Cathialam

Aam’pah-Katoh BaNtump’l Cathialam's book The African Remedy focuses on problems in Africa and within the black community in the United States. He discusses the corruption at the governmental level in Africa as well as what he calls an 'inferiority complex' that leads to treatments that relax kinky hair and skin lightening treatments. His conclusion is that the black man must regain self-respect before expecting or demanding respect from others. Cathialam writes that the widespread inferiority complex has resulted in the loss of African languages leading to a loss of cultural identity. He suggests that a resurgence of African languages and dress as well as a move away from capitalism--a system that he says is incongruent with African tradition--would help reduce corruption and loss of identity in Africa.

Aam’pah-Katoh BaNtump’l Cathialam is a local Senegalese author. He was born in Africa and has spent time in various parts of the United States. He taught himself English and recently completed The African Remedy--his first book.
