Mid-May events at Sedition

Hey folks,

Thanks heaps to the good folks at the Kansas Street house that hosted our most recent fundraiser. We are gradually digging ourselves out of debt and you know what that means, yep we bought more great books. We recently acquired a slew of new anarchist titles including perrenial favorites by Emma Goldman and Bakunin. Those classics were complemented by a special order to bring our feminism section up to date as well. So come on in and see the new goodies lining the shelves.

We have some super important events coming up this week, not least of which is the meeting TOMORROW to plan a proper welcoming celebration for those planet despoilers over at Chevron. Drop by the infoshop on Tuesday at 7:30 if you want to help plan the welcome wagon for the Chevron shareholders' meeting later this month!

Other than that things are rolling along at Sedition, our Thursday Anarchist Coffeehouse is proving to be a huge success, seems like a great place to come and hang out with your pals. And the coffee is tasty as well!

Sedition Books is still located at 901 Richmond Avenue (That's one block East of Montrose) and you can call or check out our website for more info: 713.523.0807 or www.seditionbooks.org

You can also look for us on facebook or myspace or follow our news on twitter-just search for seditionbooks.

All events are free but we can always use your donations for the infoshop and the touring bands and speakers.

Planning Meeting for Chevron Share Holders Protest on May 26th

What if by changing one company you could change the world?

Chevron can run, but it can’t hide!

Chevron shareholders usually meet in San Ramon, CA but nearly a decade pressure has them on the run and heading to Houston, where we're going to welcome them with some Southern hospitality.

Want to help? Join us at Sedition Books, 901 Richmond, Tuesday May 11th from 7:30-8:30 pm to share creative outreach ideas for the public forum and rally. Cool posters and fliers will be available for distribution.

On May 25 and 26, representatives from communities harmed by -- and fighting back against -- Chevron are coming to Houston to confront the oil giant at its annual shareholder meeting.

Here at home and across the globe, Chevron puts our health, security, and climate at great risk. That's why it's the focus of a growing resistance movement. Community leaders from Angola, Burma, New Mexico, Australia, Kazakhstan, Alaska, Ecuador, Texas, Nigeria, California, Colombia, Mississippi, Canada, Thailand, Wyoming, and more will share their stories of struggles and success against the oil giant at a Public Forum on May 25 from 6-8pm at the Rice Media Center
http://wwwfilm.rice.edu/Content.aspx?id=90.

Then, on May 26 from 7-11am, at Chevron’s AGM, they’ll hold a fun and colorful protest rally at Chevron’s headquarters at 1500 Louisiana.

Join Sedition and Houston Animal Rights Team (HART) as we screen this powerful documentary exposing the dark side of performance animals, from captures that often kill other members of the herd, to continually abusive treatment in captivity.

This screening is part of a Global Day of Action demanding that Lolita, the Orca that has been held in captivity longer than any other, be freed and returned to the wild.

Followed by discussion and letter writing as we attempt to Free Lolita from her tank in Miami.

Dinner and a Movie: The Baader Meinhof Complex

Come on out for another delicious vegan dinner and a film about the armed left-wing resistance in Germany in the late 60's early 70's...

7pm dinner: Vegan meal!
8pm movie:

The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008)

Germany 1967. The children of the Nazi generation have grown up in the devastation their parents created. They vowed fascism would never rule again. In their fight for freedom they lost themselves in the cause and ignited a revolution around the world. Uli Edel directs this film, charting the birth of West Germany's Red Army Faction, a radical left-wing terrorist group formed in the late 1960s amid a climate of revolution and a fallen generation. Staging a series of bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, the RAF waged a war against fascism with a direct assault against the powers of American imperialism and the fledgling German democracy. The film is a dramatized account, and should not be taken as an accurate portrayal of all the characters involved. Still, it captures the context of the times...

Maybe a few games of soccer, tag, or kick the can, and definately some dramatic readings of our favorite revolutionaries.
