May at Sedition
Hey Houstonites,
May Day in Houston went off pretty much without a hitch. Thousands of folks marched through Southwest Houston to demand a just immigration policy and to denounce the racist Law 1070 recently enacted in Arizona. Later that evening Sedition hosted a benefit at Mango's and it was a rollicking success! Thanks to everyone who came out to support the infoshop and especially the bands that played and the patient bartenders.
Unfortunately, May Day 2010 was not so bucolic in other parts of the country. There were arrests in Portland, San Francisco and Asheville, NC to name a few places where demonstrations turned into police riots. We want to draw your attention to the North Carolina arrests and the effort to bury the 11 people arrested there under a massive bail sentence. They are being charged with misdemeanor damage but bail has been set at $65,000 per person. Four of the eleven people are still being held in solitary confinement. It is nothing new to see police and government using high bail to try to scare activists into not acting and speaking their minds. In this case, the total bail money comes out to over 700,000$ and the accused are in desperate need of assistance. Folks in Asheville are asking for solidarity from their comrades around the US and the world--if you can help financially, please email
Sedition Books has a few other events you may be interested in coming up, including a second benefit party--this time the bands will be acoustic and the venue will be the backyard of one of our collective members...so come on out
Oh yeah we are excited to tell you about the anarchist cafe nights that have been going on on Thursdays, nothing too organized just a moment for social gathering and a bit of caffeine.
Sedition Books is still located at 901 Richmond Avenue (That's one block East of Montrose) and you can call or check out our website for more info: 713.523.0807 or www.seditionbooks.org
You can also look for us on facebook or myspace or follow our news on twitter-just search for seditionbooks.
All events are free but we can always use your donations for the infoshop and the touring bands and speakers.
Hey speaking of donations, we recently received a vast mountain of books that were donated by the Rhizome Collective's now defunct radical library in Austin—a sad story but fortunately we were able to save a lot of the books for Sedition’s library. We are hoping that someone out there has a couple of sturdy book shelves we could have to house the new titles. Call the store to arrange pick up or delivery...

Dinner and a Movie: The Baader Meinhof Complex
Come on out for another delicious vegan dinner and a film about the armed left-wing resistance in Germany in the late 60's early 70's...
7pm dinner: Vegan meal!
8pm movie:
The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008)
Germany 1967. The children of the Nazi generation have grown up in the devastation their parents created. They vowed fascism would never rule again. In their fight for freedom they lost themselves in the cause and ignited a revolution around the world. Uli Edel directs this film, charting the birth of West Germany's Red Army Faction, a radical left-wing terrorist group formed in the late 1960s amid a climate of revolution and a fallen generation. Staging a series of bombings, kidnappings and assassinations, the RAF waged a war against fascism with a direct assault against the powers of American imperialism and the fledgling German democracy. The film is a dramatized account, and should not be taken as an accurate portrayal of all the characters involved. Still, it captures the context of the times...
$5 suggested donation
