What Does It Mean to Be a Human Being? The Mistaken Identities of Nation/Race/Gender
A Talk and Discussion with Robert Jensen on the themes in his last four books:
All My Bones Shake: Seeking a Progressive Path to the Prophetic Voice, Soft Skull Press, 2009.
Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity, South End Press, 2007.
The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege, City Lights Books, 2005.
Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity, City Lights Books, 2004.
In these books, Jensen examines how nation, race, and gender affect our understanding of ourselves, with a focus on the unjust systems of power and privilege in which they are embedded. In each case he argues against the dominant culture's ideology and for a politics of liberation. In his most recent book, Jensen explores how a progressive theology combined with radical politics can help us transcend the constraints of nationalism, racism, and sexism.
Robert Jensen is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism. Jensen has published four critical books on media and power: Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity (South End Press, 2007); The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege (City Lights, 2005); Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity (City Lights, 2004); and Writing Dissent: Taking Radical Ideas from the Margins to the Mainstream (Peter Lang, 2002). In addition to these texts, Jensen writes for both the alternative and mainstream popular media, with opinion and analytic pieces on politics, power, and race appearing in papers across the country.
This event is a fundraiser for KPFT with a suggested donation of $10 but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds
