Seditious Goings-on in April

Hey y'all

We have a slew of events coming up but perhaps the most pressing one is a show that was scheduled for TONIGHT! That's right, come out and support local acts that support Sedition.

We are also just a week away from Bob Jensen's talk on Nation, Race and Gender at the Houston Institute for Culture. And don't forget the volunteer training that we are hosting next Saturday. We are always looking for new folks to get involved with the infoshop and this is the easiest way to train a bunch of folks at one time in a festive environment. or something like that.

Sedition Books is still located at 901 Richmond Avenue (That's one block East of Montrose) and you can call or check out our website for more info: 713.523.0807 or www.seditionbooks.org You can also look for us on facebook or myspace or follow our news on twitter-just search for seditionbooks.

All events are free but we can always use your donations for the infoshop and the touring bands and speakers.

Bob Jensen: What Does It Mean to Be a Human Being? The Mistaken Identities of Nation/Race/Gender

Join Sedition Books and KPFT in welcoming Bob Jensen back to Houston.

In his writing, Jensen examines how nation, race, and gender affect our understanding of ourselves, with a focus on the unjust systems of power and privilege in which they are embedded. In each case he argues against the dominant culture's ideology and for a politics of liberation. In his most recent book, Jensen explores how a progressive theology combined with radical politics can help us transcend the constraints of nationalism, racism, and sexism.

Robert Jensen is a professor at the UT-Austin School of Journalism. Jensen is the author of many critical books on media and power including: Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity; The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege. Jensen also writes for both the alternative and mainstream popular media, with opinion and analytic pieces on politics, power, and race

This event is a fundraiser for KPFT with a suggested donation of $10 but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Volunteer Training Day

Sedition is always in need of volunteers to fill a number of roles. To make it easier for people to start volunteering, we are hosting a training day where we'll go over all the things volunteers do- including: opening and closing procedures; selling books; placing book orders; organizing events and maintaining the library.

Sure, this list sounds sort of boring, but we promise to make it fun!
So, if you have been thinking about getting involved but haven't quite known how, here's your chance! See you there.

Ciclo de Cine Radical en Español (Spanish Language Radical Film Series): Sleep Dealer

Sleep Dealer (2008, 90 min.) Mexico. The near future. Memo Cruz has always dreamed of leaving his tiny village and heading north. But when he is ultimately forced to leave, Memo finds a future so bizarre - border walls, shantytowns, hi-tech factories, remote control drones and aqua-terrorists - that it looks a lot like today.

As director Alex Rivera once said, "Why invent a dystopic future for my movie when I could imitate a dystopic present?"

Sleep Dealer is Rivera’s first full-length feature film in which he presents his dystopian extrapolation of current social, economic and political trends in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands towards the near future. The film is the culmination of over a decade of digital media in which Alex analyzes immigration-related phenomena, such as transnationalism, and exposes and extrapolates the problematics of current nation-state ideologies and policies relative to Latin American labor migrations to the U.S.
