Late January Events
Hey y'all
Sedition is hosting a lot of events in the next few weeks. We hope you can come out to a few of them. Tonight we are screening Corazon del Tiempo. A Houston premiere of this 2009 film. And tomorrow radical theater, Friday there are a ton of things to choose from. I say go to the Gringoyo screening at Rice then run over to Sedition to hear locals Cory Derden and Air Castle Mystery Solved open for Malcolm Rollick.
Some of you may have noticed that this month's Fundraiser Dinner and a Movie is The Agronomist, a documentary about human rights organizing in Haiti. After learning of the earthquake in Haiti last Tuesday, Sedition decided to route any funds raised at this event to Partners in Health, a group with a 20 year history of providing quality health care and training in Haiti. Please mark your calendars for this event.
In other news, the infoshop is doing reasonably well, we have been slowly paying off our debts to suppliers but we really need to rent the small space beside us to a sympathetic business, individual or organization. If you are interested please drop by the store for a tour or call us at 713-523-0807.
Sedition Books is still located at 901 Richmond Avenue (That's one block East of Montrose) and you can call or check out our website for more info: 713.523.0807 or www.seditionbooks.org
As always. All events are free but we can always use your donations for the infoshop and the touring bands and speakers.

Spanish Language Film Series
Corazon del Tiempo (Spanish w/ English Subtitles, 90 min, 2009)
In the mountains of South-Eastern Mexico, in a Zapatista village, Sonia, is coming of age. She is expected to marry Miguel, a community leader she has known since childhood. Her future seems set until one day, as she meanders along a jungle path, she finds herself staring into the eyes of a handsome rebel fighter, Lieutenant Julio, and falls deeply in love. Sonia’s revolution of the heart threatens the wills and convictions of everyone around her and puts the security of her community, and the entire insurgent army, in danger.
Corazon del Tiempo is more than a romance set in Zapatista territory. It is the first feature length film filmed with Zapatista supporters as actors and filmed entirely in an EZLN community. Corazon del Tiempo is a rare and intimate look into the heart of the Zapatista revolution in Chiapas, Mexico.

6:30pm
Insurgent Theatre presents: "Ulysses' Crewmen"
Show starts at 6:30 with music from Torry Mercer and the Deconstruction Crew
A chair. A gun. A radio. Two actors. 60 minutes.
We join the struggle against imperial political economies arranged by bureaucratic trade regimes that make us all complicit in the exploitation and destruction of others. We use Homer's Odyssey as a framework to stage these struggles as a single claustrophobic scene between two people, one of whom is bound and gagged. Ulysses' Crewmen have mutinied. The captain has been captured and the moral of Homer's tale has been reversed. All the mutineers perished but one, who is now left alone with the hero of all western civilization struggling against obsolete morality and the impossibility of ethical action.
The show is intense, high energy, and contains strong language.
Show starts at 6:30 with music from Torry Mercer and the Deconstruction Crew
Donations welcome.

Dinner and a Movie: The Agronomist
A Benefit for Partners in Health
On January 12th, Haiti was rocked by a massive earthquake. The resulting destruction killed and injured thousands and left the health infrastructure devastated. Sedition is hosting our normal monthly Dinner and a Movie fundraiser but we are designating all funds raised as a donation to Partners in Health.
PIH has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. Partners In Health works to bring modern medical care to poor communities in nine countries around the world. The work of PIH has three goals: to care for our patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease in their communities, and to share lessons learned around the world. The vast majority of PIH staff are local nationals based in the communities we serve.

Join us Wednesday,January 27th for The Agronomist (2003, 90 min, in French with English subtitles)--a profile of Haitian radio journalist and human rights activist, Jean Dominique. It includes: historical footage of Haiti's vivid and tumultuous past; interviews with Dominique and with Michele Montas, his heroic wife, life-long love, and extraordinary partner.
The title refers to Dominique’s original vocation helping farmers in the rural communities of Haiti. He came from the upper classes, but continued his battles in representing his country’s poor and dispossessed even as his career path changed to professional broadcaster. As operator of the independent Radio Haiti Inter from 1960 until his death, Dominique became a hero to the masses and a frequent enemy of the government. The documentary incorporates historic footage shot before Dominique's assassination on April 3, 2000.
7pm Dinner: Delicious vegan meal
8pm Movie: The Agronomist

Masked Mexico In the Age of Anxiety
Two Films by Greg Berger on Swine Flu Hysteria and Paramilitary Violence in Chiapas
Director Greg Berger in attendance to lead Q&A
Amor en Tiempos de Influenza (Love in Times of Influenza) 15 minutes
Written, shot, and edited in the heat of Mexico's 2009 swine flu scare, this fictionalized documentary combines historical narrative and absurdist Mexico City street theatre to unmask the political interests behind Mexico's flu scare, particularly the role that U.S. agribusiness corporation Smithfield Foods may have played in the mutation of the H1N1 virus.
La Rebeldia Bajo Sitio (Rebellion Under Siege), 35 minutes
In Mexico's Chiapas State, indigenous farmers are being beaten, shot and imprisoned by armed thugs and their government supporters, after years of relative calm in the region. Most of the victims are civilian supporters of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. Commissioned by Venezuelan television network TeleSUR, this documentary discusses the connections between the U.S.-funded drug war and the return of paramilitary violence to Chiapas.
Greg Berger, known also as "Gringoyo," is a Mexico based filmmaker, journalist, Professor of Film at the Art Department of the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, and self-proclaimed "revolutionary tourist." His work has been screened at museums, galleries, and town squares on five continents, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, and the Mexico City Zocalo. For two years he has been a television segment producer for the Caracas based network TeleSUR.
